Château de Rougeon is located in the Burgundian sub-region Côte Chalonnaise and has belonged to the Ozanon-Bouchard family since 1839. Charles Ozanon, the son of the domaine’s founder, was a botanist whose experiments with root grafts were instrumental in the fight against the phylloxera invasion. He established a nursery that provided American root grafts that were used to replant the decimated vineyards of the Côte de Beaune in the last half of the 19th century. His son Dr. Henri Ozanon was a member of the commission that established the original guidelines for the Appellations d’Origine Controlée. In 1921, Henri’s daughter Charlotte Gabrielle married Antonin Victor Bouchard, from the famed wine merchant family in Beaune. Their grandson Dominique Bouchard and his wife Isabelle took the reins in 1981.
Dominique was a passionate farmer committed to the practice of sélection massale, which involves carefully selecting and propagating vines from healthy, high-quality, and genetically distinct parent plants to encourage diversity of character and disease-resistance. Well before it was common, he farmed organically and used only sheep to mow the rows. He passed away unexpectedly in 2017; Isabelle and two of their children, Joseph and Florence, have lovingly continued these practices in the years since.
Surrounded by pastures and forests, the isolation, geology, and biodiversity of Rougeon’s location make it special. The vineyards are all contiguous and they are situated at a high altitude (400 m) on both granite and limestone soils. Granite is unusual in Burgundy until you reach the Beaujolais, and it gives their wines particular characteristics of texture, elegance and precision.
