Alessandro Vignali grew up in Marinella di Sarzana just three kilometers away from where he now grows grapes on the hills of Luni, where the terrain is known as “Pezzo Grande”. The vineyards are planted in the basin formed where the hills of Tuscany and Liguria meet, and where the soil is rich in gray clay. Alessandro speaks of winemaking as finally bringing “his dreams down to earth” (hence “terra della luna”), a pursuit which began only after his retirement from the police force where he spent twenty years investigating the international drug trade. He has gone to great length to create an enterprise that has minimal environmental impact. In addition to farming without chemicals, the house and cellar are constructed with eco-friendly material, and heat pumps are solar-powered so that no fossil energy is used, in an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to zero.
