This Barolo estate has been in the family for generations, however it is only in the last few years that they have begun to produce their own wines. Everyone in the family participates – Mauro’s daughter Lucia works in the vines, her sister Elisa does the beautiful drawings for the labels, and their brother Daniele, who obtained a degree with honors in oenology from the University of Turin leads the winemaking. The domaine sits next to the little country road that connects La Morra and Novello, two communes in the Barolo appellation. The Nebbiolo vineyard is on the “wrong” side of that road, so just misses out on being called Barolo. But it’s got all the hallmarks of a good one: roses, tar, lots of red fruit, and firm tannins– only at a fraction of the price!
