ENA stands for “Eglantine & Alberto”, but it’s also symbolic of Europe, where they’re from, and America, where they’ve chosen to live, raise a family, and make wine. Eglantine Chauffour was born and raised in Provence, Alberto Bilan comes from Milan. The couple met and fell in love while working harvest in Margaret River, Australia, eventually moving to California. They made their first vintage of ENA wine in 2019 with Pinot Noir (Morey St. Denis-clones) from Mariah Vineyard. They added a Sauvignon Blanc in 2020 and Primitivo in 2021, also from Mariah.
Mariah, established in the 1970s, sits at 2600 ft above sea level and is the highest situated vineyard in the Mendocino Ridge AVA (which is itself made up of non-contiguous peaks in coastal Mendocino County at elevations of 1200 feet or higher; everything lower than that falls into Mendocino County or Anderson Valley appellations). Mariah is a special place, just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, which you can see through the redwood and Douglas fir trees that border the vineyard to the west. At this elevation the vines enjoy regular sunshine, as if they were on an island rising from the clouds of fog that blanket the land below. The only non-contiguous AVA in the United States, the Mendocino Ridge region covers more than a quarter-million acres of mountainous land, but only 75 acres are planted to vines. All the farming at Mariah is conducted following the tenets of regenerative farming – a scientific, outcomes-based methodology for improving soil health and biodiversity of the land.
Eglantine and Alberto make wines from Mariah’s fruit using a light-handed, minimalist approach: fermenting with native yeasts, aging in neutral vessels, and adding minimal amounts of sulfur. The production is tiny: 195cs of the Pinot Noir, 155cs of the Sauvignon Blanc, and 98cs of the Primitivo were made in their most recent vintage.
